This topochemistry will use as precursors solid materials in which anionic chalcogen oligomers are sandwiched between cationic sheets. These (Qn)2-type anionic groupings (Q = S, Se) are highly reactive towards zerovalent chemical elements, and will lead either to the intercalation of cationic metals into the host lattice, or to the deinsertion of half the chalcogen atoms.
