{"id":6652,"date":"2026-07-21T09:32:49","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T07:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/toward-safer-more-sustainable-and-higher-performance-battery-systems\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T09:35:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T07:35:10","slug":"toward-safer-more-sustainable-and-higher-performance-battery-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/toward-safer-more-sustainable-and-higher-performance-battery-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Toward Safer, More Sustainable, and Higher-Performance Battery Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/member\/poizot-philippe\/\">Philippe Poizot<\/a>, a professor at <a href=\"https:\/\/english.univ-nantes.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the University of Nantes<\/a> and a researcher with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/electrochemical-energy-storage-and-conversion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the ST2E team<\/a>, coordinated the writing of a chapter for the book <em>*Lithium Battery Design, Resources, Chemistry, and Recycling<\/em>*. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/member\/renault-steven\/\">St\u00e9ven Renault<\/a>, a faculty member and researcher at the University of Nantes, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/member\/gaubicher-joel\/\">Jo\u00ebl Gaubicher<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNRS<\/a> researcher at the IMN, contributed to the chapter.<\/p>\n<p>The book covers lithium resources, production processes, battery technologies, recycling methods, and future prospects, with a focus on improving sustainability and reducing environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 6, in particular, presents a forward-looking perspective on next-generation lithium batteries, focusing on four promising chemical compositions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lithium-sulfur batteries<\/li>\n<li>lithium-oxygen batteries<\/li>\n<li>Lithium-ion batteries in aqueous solutions<\/li>\n<li>organic batteries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The authors examine each system in terms of its potential for high energy density, sustainability, and applicability to mobile and stationary storage systems.<br \/>\nThe focus is on emerging strategies, including solid-state electrolytes, redox mediators, electrolytes based on highly concentrated aqueous salt solutions, and custom-designed organic redox structures.
