{"id":7566,"date":"2026-09-28T15:43:04","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T13:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/a-new-anr-project-for-the-imn-prc-h-carbocage\/"},"modified":"2026-09-28T15:43:04","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T13:43:04","slug":"a-new-anr-project-for-the-imn-prc-h-carbocage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/a-new-anr-project-for-the-imn-prc-h-carbocage\/","title":{"rendered":"A New ANR Project for the IMN: PRC H-Carbocage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/member\/ewels-chris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Ewels<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNRS<\/a> researcher on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/physics-of-materials-and-nanostructures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the PMN team<\/a>, has just received funding from<a href=\"https:\/\/anr.fr\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the ANR<\/a><\/strong> for his PRC H-Carbocage research project: &#8220;Small hydrogenated fullerenes: from the laboratory to astrophysical environments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>H-CARBOCAGE is a 54-month research project that seeks to solve a long-standing mystery in astrophysics.<\/p>\n<p>This project brings together three French research institutes: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs-imn.fr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the IMN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ismo.universite-paris-saclay.fr\/accueil-ismo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the ISMO<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universite-paris-saclay.fr\/laboratoires\/institut-dastrophysique-spatiale-ias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the IAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>International partners from Scotland (Edinburgh) and Western Ontario, Canada, are also joining this project. Fullerene C60\u2014the famous soccer-ball-shaped carbon molecule whose discovery earned its discoverers the Nobel Prize\u2014has been detected in space. However, an entire family of smaller \u201ccousins\u201d\u2014potentially stabilized by a small amount of hydrogen\u2014has never been observed or even thoroughly studied in the laboratory.  <\/p>\n<p>These hydrogenated carbon cages, or \u201cfullerenes,\u201d may help explain two of the most enigmatic and unidentified light signatures observed throughout the galaxy. Mysterious infrared emissions, as well as an ultraviolet \u201cbump\u201d first detected more than sixty years ago, have been observed. <\/p>\n<p>Combining current computer modeling, laboratory experiments, and data from the James Webb Space Telescope could make it possible to identify these previously unidentified molecules. The results obtained would thus shed light on the role hydrogen plays in the formation of some of the most fundamental carbon structures in the universe. <\/p>\n<p>The collaboration that led to the creation of H-CARBOCAGE originated from a project within the European COST network called \u201cNanospace,\u201d which focused on the study of carbon molecules in space.
