Abstract
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery recycling is a major challenge in the face of growing demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. End-of-life battery management raises several challenges, ranging from collection, neutralization and disassembly to actual recycling, involving chemical treatments. Different technologies, such as NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt), LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and LMO (lithium manganese oxide) batteries, require specific approaches to optimize material recovery and limit environmental impact. At the national level, research on battery recycling is beginning to be organized around a few academic and industrial players. This seminar will provide an overview of the initiatives underway in France.
Subsequently, we will examine new approaches to battery recycling, which present themselves as alternatives to conventional methods such as hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. We will highlight more energy and resource-efficient strategies, drawing on recent results obtained mainly for LFP batteries, but also for the recovery of cobalt from other types of batteries.
More specifically, we will explore several direct recycling methods suitable for the regeneration of end-of-life LFP cathodes, thus offering more sustainable and efficient solutions for the management of used batteries.
