Courses at
Nantes Université
In addition to their research activities, IMN’s teacher-researchers are heavily involved in training, teaching courses in various bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. They also have administrative and pedagogical responsibilities within several Nantes University programs.

PhD
PhD
Doctoral School 3MG (Matter, Molecules, Materials and Geosciences)
Students enrolled at Nantes Université to prepare a doctorate are also affiliated with one of the 10 regional doctoral schools, depending on their field of study, which oversee all stages of the thesis (doctoral enrolment, training, organization of the defence, etc.).
Doctoral School 596 Matter, Molecules, Materials & Geosciences (3MG) brings together physics and chemistry in the broadest sense, as well as the geosciences. The spectrum covered ranges from subatomic physics to pharmacology and the study of granular media. It brings together 237 PhD students, 8 laboratories and 20 specialties.
PhD
Doctoral School BS (Biology and Health)
Students enrolled at Nantes Université to prepare a doctorate are also affiliated, depending on their field of study, with one of the 10 regional doctoral schools, which oversee all stages of the thesis (doctoral registration, training, organization of the defense, etc.).
Doctoral studies in the field of Human Biology and Health at Nantes Université are organized by the “Health Sciences and Technologies” University Research School. Students are affiliated with the regional “Biology-Health” Doctoral School (BS, ED605). It groups some 315 doctoral students in 25 laboratories.
Master’s degree – Engineering diploma
Master
Master in Material Sciences
Faculty of Science and Technology Nantes University
The Sciences de la Matière (SdM) Master’s degree offers two courses with Bac+5, Bac+6 and Bac+8 openings: the Cursus Master et Doctorat Matériaux Innovants et Systèmes Energétiques ( E-Mat ) course and the Energies Nouvelles et Renouvelables ( ENR) course, with Bac+5, Bac+6 and Bac+8 openings.
E-Mat: a program designed to train people in physics, chemistry and materials engineering to meet the challenges of the major transitions taking place. It meets the strategic needs of academic research and industrial innovation in the fields of Information and Communications Technologies (micro/nanoelectronics, sensors, etc.), energy,…. Master 2 taught in English.
ENR: a course offering two options, Energy Devices (DE) or Energy Management (GE). 25% of teaching is provided by lecturers from the socio-professional world.
Master
Master’s degree in Chemistry
Faculty of Science and Technology Nantes University
Its aim is to train chemists in the field of chemical analysis and characterization of molecules or materials, through the learning of high-performance, modern methods of analysis, characterization and control, as well as knowledge of instrumentation.
Three courses are offered: Analyse, Molécules, Matériaux, Médicaments (A3M), Chimie Moléculaire et Thérapeutique (CMT) and the Cursus Master et Doctorat LUmière Molécule MATière (LUMOMAT).
LUMOMAT: a course designed to train high-level photoscience engineers and researchers capable of meeting today’s major challenges in energy, health, the environment and information storage.
Master
Master in Electronics, Electrical Energy and Automation – EEA
Faculty of Science and Technology Nantes University
The Master’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Energy and Automation (EEA) offers three courses at Nantes University: Electrical Energy (EE), Embedded Technologies, Artificial Intelligence (ETAI) and Intelligent Sensors and Quality of Electronic Systems (CISE).
The three courses are based on a common first-year EEA course, and cover the fundamental disciplines encountered in major industrial sectors such as automotive, aeronautics, medical, energy, telecommunications, home automation, space, etc.
A large number of lecturers from the region’s socio-economic and industrial environment are involved in the course, particularly in professional teaching.
Engineer
Materials engineering diploma
Polytech Nantes
The aim of the Materials (MAT) specialization is to develop skills in the design, implementation, modeling, manufacturing and/or assembly processes of materials, and to meet the challenges of innovation (manufacturing new products with materials and processes that can be industrialized).
The skills specific to the specialization are as follows:
> Design, implement, characterize, model and control the various aspects of the materials life cycle: resources, manufacturing and/or assembly processes, properties, applications, in-service performance, durability, recycling.
> Consider the scientific and technical characteristics of materials, applications and associated processes (chemical, physical or mechanical phenomena).
Master
Interdisciplinary Master in Innovative Technologies
Nantes IUT
The Master Interdisciplinaire en Technologies Innovantes (ITI) offers a scientific and technological curriculum in which innovation is a constant feature of both classroom and project-based courses.
This R&D executive training program is designed to meet the needs of local companies as their industrial base evolves (industry of the future, smart factories, etc.).
All students follow a common core curriculum ranging from the philosophy and sociology of innovation to project management, design and all forms of communication, in both French and English.
Bachelor – BUT
Bachelor
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry
Faculty of Science and Technology Nantes University
The Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry offers three types of pathway: Chemistry, Chemistry-Biology and Chemistry Access Health (L.AS).
The main aim of the Chemistry pathway is to acquire a solid, well-balanced foundation.
Bachelor
Bachelor’s degree in physics
Faculty of Science and Technology Nantes University
The aim of the Bachelor’s degree in Physics is to provide students with a solid foundation of basic knowledge in physics, enabling them to enter a Master’s degree in any discipline.
Bachelor
Professional degree in Elastomer Design and Processing
Nantes IUT
The CTE bachelor’s degree trains specialists in the use of elastomer materials, integrating the product/process relationship: from manufacturing preparation to part development.
BUT
BUT Science and Engineering
of Materials
Nantes IUT
The SGM sector offers a response to industrial needs arising from the evolution of materials and increasingly demanding requirements in terms of performance and environmental constraints.
University degree
University degree
Welding engineering
Polytech Nantes
There is currently a strong demand for welding engineers in France, mainly due to the fact that a number of codes and standards require the presence of welding coordinators within companies. Certified IWE (International Welding Engineer) personnel are de facto welding coordinators, making them highly sought-after collaborators.
Ongoing training
at IMN
Training Diffraction by polycrystalline materials
Our laboratory, heavily involved in the crystallography of polycrystalline phases, offers two training courses.
The first five-day course includes, at the request of several participants, specific workshops (indexing, Le Bail or Rietveld-type global profile refinements, quantitative phase identification and analysis, microstructural analysis) as well as an introduction to electron diffraction.
The second three-day course is aimed at experienced users.
