WERNERT Romain
Position:
- Since September 2025: Postdoctoral researcher at IMN (Electrochemical Storage and Transformation of Energy group – ST2E)
- 2023-2025: Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford (Hayward group)
Qualifications:
2023: PhD from the University of Bordeaux. Thesis titled “Crystal chemistry and redox mechanisms of vanadium phosphates and Prussian blue analogues for K-ion batteries” carried out under the supervision of Dr. Laurence Croguennec (ICMCB), Prof. Dany Carlier (ICMCB) and Dr. Laure Monconduit (ICGM).
Expertise:
- Synthesis of inorganic materials
- crystal chemistry
- X-ray and neutron diffraction
- X-ray absorption spectroscopy and redox mechanisms
- Electrochemical characterisations.
Biography:
After graduating from the University of Bordeaux in the field of solid-state chemistry applied to battery electrode materials (January 2023), I moved to the University of Oxford, working in Mike Hayward’s group as a postdoctoral research assistant. During that time, I was exploring anionic intercalation chemistry in Ruddlesden-Popper compounds. I developed and applied sequential topochemical anion insertion-deinsertion reactions of fluoride ions in oxide-based frameworks to tailor the transition metal’s electron count, local coordination and magnetic properties. Moving back home in Nantes, in September 2025, I joined the Electrochemical Storage and Transformation of Energy group, and more precisely the “power batteries” team led by Prof Thierry Brousse. My research interest lies in the design of new oxide negative electrode materials for fast-charging batteries. I am interested in understanding how the crystal structures and nature of chemical bonds rule properties of inorganic solids and achieving comprehension from the microscopic scale using local probes, to the long-distance scale using diffraction techniques.
Prizes:
- Battery Young Researcher Award from the Battery Innovation Days (Novembre 2023, Bordeaux) European jury.
- Best Thesis Award (2022-2023) from Société Chimique de France section Aquitaine (April 2023, Bordeaux).
