Toward Safer, More Sustainable, and Higher-Performance Battery Systems

Philippe Poizot, a professor at the University of Nantes and a researcher with the ST2E team, coordinated the writing of a chapter for the book *Lithium Battery Design, Resources, Chemistry, and Recycling*. Stéven Renault, a faculty member and researcher at the University of Nantes, along with Joël Gaubicher, a CNRS researcher at the IMN, contributed to the chapter.

The book covers lithium resources, production processes, battery technologies, recycling methods, and future prospects, with a focus on improving sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

Chapter 6, in particular, presents a forward-looking perspective on next-generation lithium batteries, focusing on four promising chemical compositions:

  • lithium-sulfur batteries
  • lithium-oxygen batteries
  • Lithium-ion batteries in aqueous solutions
  • organic batteries.

The authors examine each system in terms of its potential for high energy density, sustainability, and applicability to mobile and stationary storage systems.
The focus is on emerging strategies, including solid-state electrolytes, redox mediators, electrolytes based on highly concentrated aqueous salt solutions, and custom-designed organic redox structures. Although none of these technologies has yet become dominant in the market, their development opens up promising prospects for safer, more sustainable, and higher-performance battery systems.
