Biography:
With a Master’s degree in Innovative Materials and Energy Systems, I did my end-of-studies internship at STMicroelectronics in Tours, where I worked on optimizing an etching process for TaN/SiN/TaN capacitors. Currently a PhD student at the Institut des Matériaux Jean Rouxel in the PCM team, my work focuses on the development of electrodes for 3D micro-supercapacitors, using high-power pulse sputter deposition techniques (HiPIMS) and its enhanced variant e-HiPIMS. The aim of this thesis is to optimize the structuring, compliance and electrochemical performance of electrodes (TiN, VN/VOxNy) on 3D substrates to meet high-density energy storage needs in miniaturized systems.

WERNERT Romain
Position:
- Since October 2026: CNRS researcher (CR Section 17)
- 2025–2026: CNRS postdoctoral fellow in chemistry at IMN (Electrochemical Storage and Transformation of Energy group – ST2E)
- 2023-2025: Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford (Hayward group)
Qualifications:
2023: PhD from the University of Bordeaux. Thesis titled “Crystal chemistry and redox mechanisms of vanadium phosphates and Prussian blue analogues for K-ion batteries” carried out under the supervision of Dr. Laurence Croguennec (ICMCB), Prof. Dany Carlier (ICMCB) and Dr. Laure Monconduit (ICGM).
Expertise:
- Synthesis of inorganic materials
- crystal chemistry
- X-ray and neutron diffraction
- X-ray absorption spectroscopy and redox mechanisms
- Electrochemical characterisations.
Biography:
After graduating from the University of Bordeaux with a degree in solid-state chemistry applied to battery electrode materials (January 2023), I moved to the University of Oxford to work in Mike Hayward’s group as a postdoctoral research assistant. During that time, I investigated anionic intercalation chemistry in Ruddlesden-Popper compounds. I developed and applied sequential topochemical anion insertion-deinsertion reactions of fluoride ions in oxide-based frameworks to tailor the transition metal’s electron count, local coordination, and magnetic properties.
After moving back home to Nantes in September 2025, I joined the Electrochemical Storage and Transformation of Energy group, specifically the “high-power batteries” team. My research interests focus on the design of new oxide negative electrode materials for fast-charging batteries. I am interested in understanding how crystal structures and the nature of chemical bonds determine the properties of inorganic solids, and in gaining insight ranging from the microscopic scale—using local probes—to the long-range scale—using diffraction techniques.
Prizes:
- Battery Young Researcher Award from the Battery Innovation Days (Novembre 2023, Bordeaux) European jury.
- Best Thesis Award (2022-2023) from Société Chimique de France section Aquitaine (April 2023, Bordeaux).
