Thin films that “bloom” for better performance

Thin films deposited on substrates are at the heart of many technologies, from optical systems to biomedical devices, electronics and solar panels. By controlling the topography of the substrate, a research team including scientists from the Institut des Matériaux de Nantes Jean Rouxel (CNRS – Nantes Université), the Institut Jean Lamour, the University of Namur (Belgium), ICS-Innovative Coating Solutions (Belgium) and the Institut Femto-ST, have demonstrated that it is possible to transform thin films into true three-dimensional architectures. The accessible surface thus created offers new prospects for applications such as electrochemical energy conversion and storage. The results have been published in the journal Adv. Funct. Mater.
