Gustave Eiffel Research Director

My research focuses on understanding the physicochemical mechanisms that govern the reactivity and transformations of mineral materials, particularly clays, aluminosilicates, and cementitious materials.

They aim to establish the relationships between composition, structure, reactivity, and properties by combining experimental approaches with multiscale characterization, from the atomic scale to the microstructural scale.

My main areas of research are:

  • Natural and activated clays: structural transformations, thermal and mechanical activation, and reactivity mechanisms.
  • Dissolution and Reactivity of Aluminosilicates: Dissolution Mechanisms in Alkaline Media, Reaction Kinetics, and Surface Changes.
  • Binders and cementitious materials: hydration, pozzolanic reactions, alkaline activation, and the formation of reaction products.
  • Geomaterials: physicochemical interactions between soils and binders, microstructural evolution, and durability.
  • Secondary mineral resources: understanding their reactivity and their potential for use in construction materials.

This research relies in particular on electron microscopy and microanalysis, solid-state NMR, X-ray diffraction, and vibrational spectroscopy, in addition to reactivity and dissolution experiments conducted under controlled conditions.

They are part of a basic research effort, with potential applications in the development of materials with a low environmental footprint and the sustainable use of mineral resources.

Research projects

  • SOILFRAME — MSCA Doctoral Network (proposal in preparation, 2026): understanding and controlling the properties of excavated materials with a view to their reuse in construction and circular resource management.
  • Adam&Eve — CNRS PRIME–MITI (2025–2027): an interdisciplinary basic research project combining materials science and Earth sciences.
  • Saint-Gobain Recherche (since 2025): Study of the physicochemical mechanisms governing the reactivity of mineral additives in low-carbon cementitious materials.
  • GWILEN (2025–2026): Characterization and study of the reactivity of marine sediments with a view to their use in construction materials.

Biography:

Thomas Devic obtained his PhD in 2003 from the University of Angers. After a postdoctoral stay at Cornell University, USA, under the supervision of Stephen Lee, he was recruited to the CNRS at the Institut Lavoisier in Versailles, France, in 2004, within the “Porous Solids” research group headed by Gérard Férey. In 2016, he joined the Institut des Matériaux Jean Rouxel, in Nantes, France, where he is currently CNRS Research Director. His research focuses mainly on organic-inorganic hybrid materials, with a particular emphasis on synthesis and structural characterization. He is interested in the development of new hybrid compounds (salts, complexes and coordination polymers, MOFs), in particular based on non-trivial organic building blocks, the use of high-throughput tools to achieve this, their in-depth structural characterization using various analytical techniques (XRD, NMR, infrared…) and their applications in various fields, such as gas capture and electrochemical and thermal energy storage. He has supervised more than 20 doctoral and post-doctoral students, and participates in various academic and industrial collaborative projects.
